About the LTAB Database – German Literature Translated in Brazil

The LTAB database - "German Literature Translated in Brazil" presents a bibliography as complete as possible of works of German-language literature published in Portuguese in Brazil. The genres include narrative texts (novels, novellas, short stories), theater, poetry, (auto)biography, travel accounts, essays, children's and young adult literature and, more recently, comics. The various search functions allow users to search for authors, titles (in German and Portuguese), translators and publishers, as well as genres and literary periods. The record is in constant expansion and aims to offer users a view as complete as possible of the history and present of literary translation from German. In all cases in which the digitized version of a translation in the public domain is available, it has been made available for reading - so far, there are still few.

The database tools create new possibilities for individual search beyond research and teaching needs. Use is free and open to all interested parties. Anyone who registers with username and password may add notes to the digitized works.

The bibliography was compiled by the "Já foi traduzido" working group of the Universidade de São Paulo. Many students and professors have worked on the project since its beginning (2019). Currently, professors Helmut Galle and Magdalena Nowinska are responsible. An initial report on data collection was published here in 2024 in the Cadernos de Tradução journal.

Since we are constantly correcting, completing and updating the data, we also count on user help. If you find any error or gap, please contact us. Contact: ltab.usp@gmail.com

Responsible for the LTAB internet platform is the Núcleo de Pesquisa em Informática, Literatura e Linguística (NUPILL) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina - Brazil. The platform also contains specialized collections on the literature of the federal states of Santa Catarina and Maranhão, as well as a database of Brazilian translations of Italian literature. The database tools create new possibilities for research and teaching. Use is free for interested parties. Registered users may also complement information on the digitized works.
